Tetracycline Hydrochloride is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Tetracycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex. This interference disrupts the translation process and inhibits bacterial growth.
Tetracycline HCL is effective against a broad range of bacteria, both Gram-positive and Gram-negative. It is commonly used as a selective agent in culture media to isolate bacteria that are sensitive to this antibiotic. It is also used in molecular biology applications, such as the selection of bacteria carrying tetracycline resistance genes in plasmids.
