Minocycline Hydrochloride (HCl) is a tetracycline antibiotic. Minocycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex. This interference results in the inhibition of protein synthesis and ultimately inhibits bacterial growth.
Minocycline is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is often used as a selective agent in culture media to isolate bacteria that are sensitive to this antibiotic. Additionally, it has been investigated for its potential neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties in various experimental models.
